NUCLEAR TECHNICIANS provide a variety of support functions at the nuclear plant. In many instances these are entry-level jobs that give new employees an opportunity to gain valuable experience at a nuclear plant before moving into nuclear operations or maintenance.
NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY/HEALTH PHYSICS TECHNICIANS are responsible for radiation protection at the nuclear reactor site. A Health Physics Technician must be ready to respond quickly and with expertise in the unlikely event of a radiation accident. The ability to handle stressful situations is essential. Education Required: Associate’s degree and certification as a Health Physics Technician from the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists.
WELDERS use hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products. They monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT STAFF provide assistance to a variety of energy company employees with tasks such as preparing memos and documents, proofreading, using databases, and making contact with other staff members or customers. Administrative Support Staff may also plan meetings and events by ordering food, preparing the agenda and materials, setting up the room, and sending out invitations. Education Required: High school diploma or GED.
CUSTOMER SUPPORT REPRESENTATIVES confer with customers by telephone or in person to provide information about products and services, to take orders or cancel accounts, or to obtain details of complaints. They also keep records of customer interactions and transactions, recording details of inquiries, complaints, and comments, as well as actions taken. Education Required: High school diploma or GED.
